Review – Seconds Away
Let me make this short and sweet. Harlan Coben’s newest book Seconds Away is
SUSPENSEFUL BEYOND BELIEF.
POIGNANT AND BITTER SWEET.
Okay, let’s break those words down for a second. (haha, second. get it??)
Amazing: The voice of narrator Mickey Bolitar is solid. It’s funny and conversational and so real. I got him. Much like his uncle Myron, I wish he was real!!!
Wonderful: If the first book in the Mickey Bolitar series, Shelter, was dipping your toe into the mythos and characters, then Seconds Away was canon-balling right in the deep end. Harlan pulls no punches with this one. He doesn’t spend forever on backstory or trying to catch you up if you haven’t read the first. (And if you haven’t, what’s wrong with you?????) The confidence he writes with is wonderful.
Suspenseful Beyond Belief: Remember in grade school, when you had those first initial writing classes and learned all about main characters and villains and climaxes and resolutions (or denouements, for the fancy readers of this site)? Remember how you learned about cliff hangers??? Well, this book has some of the BEST cliff hangers I’ve read lately. And by lately, I’m giving myself a window of about four years. There is a surprise in every single chapter – sometimes on every other page. I could not read this thing fast enough. Whatever special crack or fairy dust Harlan sprinkled on this thing to make it irresistible well, it worked!
Poignant and Bitter Sweet: I can’t give too much away but let’s just say Mickey Bolitar struggles. He aches. His heart has been ripped out and stomped on. The relationships this boy must deal with…..sigh. That’s really all I can say. 🙂
Tease: I put this word in there because I am a huge Myron Bolitar fan and a HUGE Windsor Horne Lockwood III fan. Let’s just say, page 20. And a little farther down the line, page 160 (or something like that. I don’t have the book on me right now, but keep reading!) Two tantalizing, incredible teases for the next story. Or what I’m hoping is the next story. 🙂
I’ve put in media requests for this guy for years. Have yet to be granted an interview. So Harlan, if you’re reading this…..well, you know what to do!!!
I heart you!
