Kiss Final

New Covers!

Hey guys!

So what do you think of the new website? While I loved my last site, i thought it was time for a change. I’m big on change and spring cleaning and all that stuff. :) Can you do me a favor though? If you see any links that don’t work or any places where I write “Unstoppable” instead of “A Kiss Before Lying”, can you email me and let me know? I think I got all of it, but one can never be too sure. :)

So anyway, I have a new website. And I have new book covers to go with it! These are NOT new books. They are just rebrands of my current releases, which were called Unstoppable and Irreversible. And just to be totally clear, the only – I repeat ONLY – thing that has changed in these books is the cover and title. The book itself is still the same.

Why did I change the titles and covers? Well, a few reasons. First, I never loved the titles to begin with. At all. I never felt like they really did anything for the stories or gave the reader any hint at what the books were about. My stories are romantic suspense. Unstoppable and Irreversible don’t really hint at that, to me at least. But, with the new titles, there’s a romantic element (Kiss, Smile, Dance) but there’s also a bit of an ominous element too (Before Lying, Before Crying, Before Dying). Combined, i hope these titles give the reader a better sense of what my stories are about.

As for why I changed the covers? Again, I loved my previous covers, but because i think my books are more New Adult (to push it even farther, New Adult romantic suspense), I really wanted the covers to reflect the genre. So I did the ol’ bookstore test: I imagined myself walking into a bookstore, looking for my story, and figuring out which section it would be in. Once I had that down, I looked at all sorts of covers in that section. What did I find? Couples, color, closed eyes, almost-kisses, pretty script, sexy guys, beautiful girls. Alright! I can get my covers to look like that!

And so I did. Well, tried to. Only the readers can tell me if I pulled it off. :)

Finally, the biggest reason for the change is because, to be perfectly honest, the sales of the books weren’t where I wanted them to be. So I took the advice of JA Konrath and CJ Lyons and Joanna Penn and so many others and decided to not stick with something that wasn’t working. I decided to change. I decided to experiment. Which, by the way, is one of the huge perks of indie publishing. We’ll see if my changes pay off.

Speaking of indie-publishing, many people have asked why I decided to go the indie route for these stories. The answer is actually pretty succinct:

1. My story is a New Adult romantic suspense tale. The New Adult genre seems more vibrant online than in stores. I remember going into my local Barnes and Noble and asking them where they shelved Cora Carmack’s NA and they looked at me like I was crazy.

2. I like to try new things. I wanted to experience what indie publishing was like, and, knowing my story could fit nicely as a New Adult title, I decided to take advantage of the market trend and publish via Amazon and Smashwords.

So no big conspiracy there. :) I’ll be writing much more about my journey as an indie publisher so stay tuned. :) Right now, i think this post is long enough! So check out the new website, all the new excerpts, and don’t forget to follow me on Twitter or Facebook for lots of cat and Gaspard Ulliel pictures. :)

Irreversible Book Release

Hey guys!

So it’s finally here and out in the wild: Book 2 in the Truth and Love Series, Irreversible. I’m so proud of this story. It’s my shortest by far – about 22,000 words, but man was it tough to write! So much thanks to my beta readers and editors for really whipping it into shape. :) To celebrate the debut, I’ll be hosting some giveaways, posting excerpts and doing some other stuff over at my official author Facebook page.

Now here are the details of the book!

“…another great read! Sabrina comes so vividly to life. Her dynamic with Derek reminds me of an older, more tragic version of Eleanor & Park, which is a great tone to strike.”

“WOW!!!!!! Even more so than the first book, I could not put it down. It tugged at my heartstrings…”

“I didn’t want to put it down until I was finished reading the entire thing.”

Sometimes, the path you’re on is a collision course. Sometimes, you find yourself surrounded by broken bits and pieces, shrapnel from a fall-out that you’ll be digging from beneath your skin for years. But the most painful of all these lessons is this: A single action can shatter everything to pieces.

Sabrina James is almost six feet tall, biracial, the butt of many school jokes and the bull’s-eye of many cruel pranks. Her only ally is her childhood friend—smart, beautiful and kind Derek Archer. When she overhears two girls talking about him in the school bathroom, she can’t help but confront them. And that’s when the bet is made…a dare that will have devastating consequences for everyone.

What happened that night between best friends Sabrina James and Derek Archer? It’s a question readers have been clamoring for since they finished Unstoppable, the first book in the Truth and Love series. Now, it will all finally be revealed. Irreversible is a gut-punch of a novel with a final confrontation that will leave you breathless.

An Excerpt

“I have a big favor to ask you.”

Derek doesn’t glance up from his e-tab. He’s lying on his stomach across his bed. I’m standing in his doorway, hands braced on either side. I sigh and roll my eyes.

“Hello? Can you look up from your e-tab for a sec?”

His eyes meet mine before they go back to the tablet.

“That was nice and literal.”

“You said a second.”

I pick up a shirt from the floor and fling it at him. Unfortunately, he easily catches it. He shakes his head and scolds, “Violence is never the answer.”

In answer to his answer—the big idiot—I walk over to him, raise my hand high, and slap it hard on his ass. He yelps.

I ask, “Do I have your attention now?”

You can find out more about this story over at it’s page here. Happy reading!

Unstoppable and Irreversible Updates

I’ve got to start thinking of better titles for these posts.

Okay, so the Unstoppable update: I’ve been working on page proofs for the last few days and I sent the (hopefully) final round of edits back and it will all be accepted and great and the print book will officially go on sale in March. That is the hope. We’ll see if it becomes the reality. :)

As for Irreversible. Well, Irreversible is going a bit slower than I’d like. I finished the first draft in a mad one-day dash, but, as usual, the editing of the thing has me stumped. No, not stumped. Just going so slowly it only feels like I’m stumped. Seriously, the second draft of any story is always THE HARDEST for me. First is great. Easy and breezy. Third is wonderful because that’s when I can really start to see the story come alive. Fourth draft (and yep, I usually need them) is more for the cosmetic stuff ie making that kiss just as tad more sexy, making that silence a bit more awkward. Y’know, fourth drafts are the fun, fine-tuning stuff.

Second drafts however, are the WORST! That’s when I have to take a clump of letters that make up anywhere from 85,000 to 150,000 words and chisel and carve and mold them into some semblance of order and narrative. I have to somehow infuse actual emotion into scenes that are flatter than flat and make suspense out of dialogue that’s as cliche as can be. Second drafts are sooooo hard and so much work. And it’s also the point in the writing process where I tend to eat my weight in chocolate and/or Skittles.

Second drafts are not a good time for me.

And right now, I’m working on the second draft.

Which, come hell or high water, will be done tonight. (Because it has to be. Because my deadline to turn in the COMPLETED, full story to my editor is Friday.)

So wish me luck. And until then, happy reading!

Oh, and look out for the cover copy this week for, officially: The Second Story in the Truth and Love Series: Irreversible. (Cause yep, my book has a series title after all.)
