what i do
How I help you.
My philosophy when it comes to editing is simple: I want to help you make your book the absolute best it can be. To make sure your book reaches its highest potential. I firmly believe that no writer will ever grow unless they are challenged, and I’m here to challenge you! I know what it’s like to feel like you’re losing money, wasting time, and not getting anywhere. You want answers.
I’m here to provide those answers. I’m here to read your work and really evaluate those big core pieces of your story, such as world building, character motivation, character chemistry, pacing, magic and political systems, and more. I’m here to take a fresh look at a story that’s been in your heart for months or even years so you can take it to the next level.
Will it be hard? Yes. Will it be worth it? Yes.
what i’ve done
Many of the authors I work with are people I’ve worked with more than once. It’s a huge compliment that they return and entrust me with their valuable and vulnerable words, and continue to do so over several stories. Trust is a vital part of this process. And having fun, too. Here are some additional things to know:
years as a freelance editor
years teaching small group workshops
years teaching college level creative writing
pages read and edited
How i roll
What You Get
It’s hard seeing where your own work might be laggin’ or draggin’. I’m proud to be that new set of eyes on your story so it can be critically examined with an unbiased view and experienced perspective.
Hiring an editor is a huge step in your writing journey, and sharing your story with a stranger is extremely vulnerable and brave. Expect constructive and specific feedback but never rude or demeaning feedback.
I am honored you’re thinking of choosing me as your editor. And I can promise I will never tweet about your work or share your work. I will never, ever show your work to anyone.
Communication (lots of it)
Trust is a vital part of this process and communication is key. You’ll hear from me before, during and after the work is completed. Expect emails loaded with gifs.
I’ve got two goals: make your story better than where it started and make you more confident in it. That means I give lots and lots and LOTS of notes that you can take action on! My inline comments can be their own full page reports.
Investment in your Education
The edit you’ll receive from me will be ultra-specific to your book but also focus on timeless principals of storytelling. You’ll be able to apply my notes to not only the story we work on, but the next and the next. We’ll use your own story to help sharpen your editorial eye.
