–Tiffany Reisz, International Bestselling Author of “The Original Sinners series” (Harlequin/Mira)
I am currently taking on new clients! So if you’re looking for an extra set of eyes on your story or query, you’ve come to the right place. I’m a voracious reader and I love working one on one with a fellow writer. I don’t want to just read and send; I want to be your partner, a team. The editorial process can be daunting, so I make it my goal to be there for you 100%. Email, phone call, Google Chat, and even Skpe if you prefer (though my computer has been known to freeze on the most horrible faces! I apologize in advance). I personally love when I can collaborate and brainstorm and have a big conversation about the nitty-gritty of your story. And while I will be your biggest cheerleader, I’ll also be your biggest nudger. I’ll nudge you to get assignments back to me (if that’s the editorial package you take), I’ll nudge you to make sure you meet your deadlines. I’ll even nudge you to make sure you’re writing and not checking Facebook. 🙂 Just think of it this way: I’m about 60% Maria and 40% Captain von Trapp.
I’m extremely communicative and will definitely email or text you with random “Oh my god, you didn’t!” or “Why?!?!” or “The Feelz! The Emotionssss!!”.
As for my background, I’ve taught college course creative writing for many years and still teach an odd workshop or two. (It brings me much joy.) I’ve beta read/critiqued for many writers including international bestselling author Tiffany Reisz and award-winning author William Powers. In 2007, I accepted a position with Pittsburgh-based Lux Magazine as Senior Writer, where I was in charge of article assignments, interview liaisons, working with the art department, and editing copy. After two years there, I branched out and created my own arts and entertainment website, where I interviewed dozens of writers, performers, singers and dancers, while also becoming an ARC/book reviewer.
I was a 2017 Pitch Wars mentee and KNOW IN MY BONES what it’s like to go nuclear on a story and start from scratch. My sweet spot is big picture editing. My eyes will be trained for character inconsistencies, pacing snags, world building issues and overall plot strength – does it make sense? Is there escalation? Is the tension as tight as it can be? Is the love story as real and swoony as you can make it?
So if I sound like the editor match for you, check out the services I am currently offering. And for anyone who books for January 2018, you will receive a 15% discount.
*Though I can’t guarantee an agent, publishing contract or KDP sales, I will work my hardest to make sure you have an amazing shot at success.
You are a torch against the night – if you dare to let yourself burn. ― Sabaa Tahir, A Torch Against the Night
This is the base-step. (For all my 90s girls The Firm users, you know what I mean!) This is the editing package where I laser-focus on world building, characterization, pacing, tension and plot. You’ll get a multiple-page edit letter as well as a half-hour phone call to hammer out any details or ask any questions to clarify. Cost is .006 cents per word, so a 100,000 word manuscript would be $600.
Base step plus you get tons of comments sprinkled throughout the manuscript, as well as track changes for any typos/grammar errors that I see. Cost is .008 per word, so a 100,000 word story is $800.
I LOVE queries. And here I will do two passes on your query, focusing on line edits and clarity. Cost is $35.
Most literary agencies will ask for a query and some sample pages. Each agency is different (so be sure to carefully read guidelines). To be on the safe side, I will do the Query Pass as well as line edits and notes for the first two chapters (up to 6,000 words). Cost is $75.
Now this is what I live for! Collaboration! Brainstorming! Gif-filled email exchanges! Facetime! This is an intensive, extensive three month package, wherein I will work with you from the ground up, helping you refine your idea, build up your characters and their wants, motivations, fears and desires. I’ll help you lay out your plot so it’s as structurally sound as we can make it and I’ll do two passes of your manuscript (big picture first, then line edits) to make sure it’s as great as can be. Be prepared for lots of questions and deadlines. Be prepared to be pushed hard. Prices vary, though this package begins at $1,700. Please contact me to discuss your needs and see if we’re the right fit for each other.
Bethany Hensel is one of my few trusted beta readers. Her feedback is smart, thoughtful, and always helps make for a better book. I highly recommend Bethany’s service to authors in need of an extra set of eagle eyes attached to a very astute mind.
-Tiffany Reisz, international bestselling author
I engaged Bethany to be the editor of my book and she did a terrific job. I was extremely impressed with her attention to detail as well as her ability to recommend material modifications to the book. At all times she was professional, patient and pleasurable to work with but she was not afraid to show me the mistakes I had made. Bethany acted like a real partner on the project..
– Brad Franc, author/attorney
Bethany Hensel is an experienced author and editor, and she has provided me with invaluable feedback on my manuscripts. The developmental edits improved the flow of the story and added authenticity to my characters. The critiques are presented respectfully, with explanations related to the genre of the manuscript and today’s literary market. Bethany is a pleasure to work with and I would recommend her services as a great option for other writers trying to break into the publishing industry.
– Heather Stewart, former student
No one thing that I have done in the past five years has had a more positive impact on my writing than the decision to have Bethany Hensel critique my work. I can always count on her to provide a critique that is thorough and comments that are meticulous, yet practical and to the point. Her candid evaluation and steady encouragement have helped me get the most out of every chapter, and I have benefited immensely from her expertise and understanding of the craft. I do not consider any draft to be final until it has undergone her scrutiny, and I am certain that working with her has increased my chances of achieving my goal of being published.

*A note on timing: I am actively building my list so turnaround time is fairly quick. I can usually complete a 100,000 word manuscript in about a week. However, I won’t be able to commit to an actual time frame without first seeing a sample of the work.
*A note on pricing: all projects require a 50% deposit at the time of booking, then the remainder must be paid once the editing project is complete. The book will not be released back to you until the final invoice is paid. Invoices can be paid via PayPal or check.
